Our SEG Interface Commission member Dr.Eda Elif Tibet (Post doctoral Researcher at the Wyss Academy for Nature will be convening an engaging roundtable called "Just Transformations: Bridging Values for Visionary Futures in Equitable Biodiversity Governance'' at the Cadi Ayyad University during the ISE 2024 Congress 2024 on the 16th of May in Marrakech, Morocco.
The day will then end in a nomad tent with a screening of her film "Ait Atta: Nomads of the High Atlas" followed with a roundtable together with the co-producer; Dr. Soufiane M'sou from Moroccan Biodiversity and Livelihood Association.
The panel roundtable speakers are: Dr.Henri Rueff Head of Sustainable Land Systems Impact Area at the Centre for Development and Environment (CDE), University of Bern ; Patrick Knodel Patrick Knodel the CEO of knodel foundation , Dr.Irene Teixidor-Toneu researcher at the French National Research Institute and Dr.Timothy Adams, postdoctoral researcher at The Land, Society & Governance Research Group, Climate Change Institute at the University of Oxford.
ISE CONGRESS MARRAKECH 2024 is organised by Cadi Ayyad University, the Centre for Development and Environment, International Society of Ethnobiology, Institut de Recherche pour le Développement,the Moroccan Biodiversity and Livelihoods Association and Global Diversity Foundation.
PANEL DESCRIPTION:
The European Union (EU) has adopted policy frameworks to meet its ambitious goals of protecting nature and reversing biodiversity decline. The long-established Natura 2000 network of protected areas (PAs) is an integral part of the EU’s Biodiversity strategy for 2030, also in support of the European Green Deal. There is now increased awareness about the EU’s responsibility towards safeguarding biodiversity overseas, e.g., via ‘deforestation proof’ EU development cooperation. While these biodiversity conservation goals and policies are produced at supranational (e.g. EU, UN) levels, it is not always clear how they ultimately manifest on the ground, where conservation takes place. This is likely because conservation policies and interventions generate material (finance and technical expertise) and immaterial flows (e.g. discourses and knowledge), which support specific conservation approaches that interact in complex ways with the local contexts in which they arrive.
To inform conservation policies and practices towards more equitable and effective governance, the roundtable aims to, reflect and share experiences in how interdependencies and feedback between EU (and global) flows and local management of PAs are explored. We will also explore how these can impact biodiversity and ecosystem services (BES), their values, social equity and governance in various case studies in the EU and the Global South.
Ours is also an invitation to explore whether a transdisciplinary scholarship can identify individual and organisational actors can play a key role in shaping more equitable biodiversity governance by exploring what it means to bridge values for visionary futures that are providing reflexive alternatives.The roundtable invites speakers to unravel the ways of imaginative practices and interventions fostering change both individually and collectively by navigating uncertainty, risks and fractions.
